Softball Falls 3-2 to Elms in Eight Innings
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers scored two runs in the first inning but lost to Elms College 3-2 in eight innings in Chicopee, Massachusetts yesterday. With the victory, Elms improved to 10-9 while Smith fell to 5-19.
The Pioneers scored their two runs in the first inning. Junior Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a single by pitcher Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) who took second on the throw. Senior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) followed with a hit down the left field line that scored Robitzek and advanced Hiltzik. Catcher Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, NY) reached on a fielder's choice while Quinn advanced to second and Hiltzik was thrown out at third. First baseman Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) reached on an error to load the bases and Quinn scored Smith's second run on a passed ball.
The Pioneers maintained the lead until the bottom of the seventh when Elms designated player Destiny Meeker (Bantam, CT) hit a two-run homer to even the score. Elms took the come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the eighth on an unearned run.
Hiltzik took the loss on the mound for Smith, allowing 9 hits, 2 earned runs with 7 strikeouts while Ani Ramsdell (Gardner, MA) picked up the victory.
Smith hosts MIT on Tuesday, April 14 in a NEWMAC doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
