Smith Softball Loses as WNEC Rallies Late
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped an out of conference game to the Golden Bears of Western New England College (WNEC) by a score of 5-2. With the loss, Smith stands at 4-12 on the year, while WNEC now stands at 12-4.
The Golden Bears jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the third inning. Trish Breault (Millville, MA) led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on a bunt by Kate Post (Bridgewater, MA). Breault scored on a single by Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) and an error by the centerfielder.
Smith took the lead in the fourth inning as Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) and Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) drew consecutive walks. After Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) grounded into a fielders choice, Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, NY) also drew a walk to load the bases for Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA). Paull then singled down the left field line, scoring both Fryer and Quinn to take the lead 2-1.
This score held until the 6th inning when the Bears tied the score on back to back doubles by Breault and Post. WNEC added three insurance runs in the 7th inning, including a home run by Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, CT) to secure the 5-2 victory.
In the circle, Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) picked up with win for the Bears throwing a complete game giving up only the two earned runs while striking out six. Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) took the loss for the Pioneers, giving up five earned runs while striking out six.
The Pioneers return to action Friday as they host conference opponent MIT for a double header beginning at 3:30.
