Softball Drops Home Opener to Trinity College

Northampton, MA: Playing their first home game of the 2009 season, the Smith College softball team lost a well-played contest against Trinity College, 7-3. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 3-8 on the season, while the Bantams improve to 7-6 overall.

Megan Kiefer '10 (Oak Park, IL) led off the game for the Pioneers with a triple giving Smith the opportunity to take the early lead over Trinity. Kiefer scored to put Smith up 1-0 off of a Laura Robitzek '10 (Auburn, ME) single RBI. Senior Erin Quinn '09 (Northbrook, IL) doubled to bring home Robitzek, while Kirstie Beaton's '12 (Osterville, MA) double would eventually score Quinn to give the Pioneers the 3-0 lead heading into the top of the second inning.

Trinity College quickly responded as Ariana Mullin '09 (Woodbridge, CT) hit a double to put the Bantams in scoring position. Stacy Hathcox's '09 (Woodinville, WA) triple scored three players for the Bantams--Mullin, Melanie Orphanos '11 (Norton, MA), and Erica Klotz '10 (Naperville, IL)-- tying the game at 3-3.

After scoreless third and fourth innings Trinity College rallied to score two runs off a single by Patricia Cipicchio '10 (Southmont, NC). Trinity would score again in the sixth inning to take and hold onto the four run lead to secure the road win.

Emily Hiltzik '09 (Westbury, NY) pitched all seven innings for the Pioneers striking out three batters. Gabrielle Sergi '09 (Walpole, MA) earned the win for the Bantams.

Smith softball will host Clark University in their first NEWMAC contest of the season on Friday, March 28 at 3:30 pm.
