Softball Drops Pair of Close Games on Final Day in Florida

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped two close games in Florida, both by scores of 3-0 to Allegheny and McDaniel Colleges. With the losses, Smith finished its spring trip 3-7.

In game one against Allegheny, Smith was hurt by five defensive miscues that led to all three of the Gators' runs. Senior Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) took the hard luck loss in the circle, giving up only 6 hits over 7 innings while striking out one batter and allowing no earned runs.

Offensively, the Pioneers were led by senior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) who went 2-3. Also collecting hits for Smith were senior Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA), first year Kathryn Durkin (Victor, NY) and junior Megan Kiefer (Oak Oark, IL).

In game two, facing McDaniel College, the Pioneers were held to just 1 hit over 7 innings. Kiefer who had the lone hit for Smith, also had a stolen base.

Quinn took the loss in the circle for Smith, giving up 3 earned runs over 4.1 innings pitched. Hiltzik then came in to throw 1.2 innings of shutout relief while striking out two.

The Pioneers return to action, Tuesday, March 24th at 4 pm as they host Trinity College in their home opener.
