Smith Drops Two at Rebel Spring Games
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped a pair of tight games this morning, losing 8-3 to Endicott College then losing 7-4 to William-Patterson University. With the losses, Smith's record now stands at 3-5 on the year.
In game one against regional powerhouse Endicott, the Pioneers were able to jump out front early with a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) led off the inning with a hard single to left field. Senior Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) followed up with a single left hit of her own to put runners at first and second bases with no outs. First year Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, NY) drew a walk to load the bases for first year Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, ME). Beaton also drew a walk, loading the bases and forcing in a run. First year Kathryn Durkin (Victor, NY) then singled to left field, driving in Paull, earning an RBI and putting up Smith 2-0.
Endicott responded with four runs in the bottom half of the second inning and held Smith to just one run over the final 4 frames for the 8-3 victory. Quinn led the Pioneers going 3-3. Teammate Durkin also had a strong game for Smith, going 2-3 with an RBI. In the circle, senior Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) took the loss, giving up 6 earned runs over six innings while striking out one batter.
Against perennial national contender William-Patterson, the Pioneers fell behind 3-0 in the top half of the third inning. Smith, aided by defensive miscues by WPU, responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game 3-3. William-Patterson took the lead by a run in the fourth inning and tacked on three additional runs for the 7-4 win.
For the Pioneers, junior Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) went 1-2 with a run scored, while Quinn, Paull and sophomore Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) each collected one hit. In the circle, Quinn took the loss, giving up 6 earned runs over 7 innings.
Smith finishes its spring trip Friday, March 20th as they take on Allegheny and McDaniels College.
