Softball Splits Pair of Games

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers split a pair of games this afternoon in their third day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. In game one, Smith defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) 10-2 (5 innings). In the second game of the day, Smith fell 4-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout. With the split, the Pioneers now stand at 3-3 on the year.

In game one, leading by one run going into the second, Smith added some insurance runs as sophomore Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) led the inning off with a single to left field and proceeded to steal second base. After moving to third base on a ground out by sophomore Salma Mehter (Seattle, WA), Martinez scored after junior Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) drove her home with a RBI ground out. Junior Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) and senior Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) then each added singles to left field to put two runners on base for senior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) who hit a triple to right field, earning two RBIs. Following a walk by senior Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA), first year Sarah Goodman (Pittsford, NY) drove a two RBI double to left field, putting Smith up 5-0.

Quinn finished the day 3-3 with two RBIs as well as two runs scored. Additionally, Goodman was 1-2 with 3 RBIs. In the circle, senior Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) picked up the win throwing 5 innings and giving up 2 earned runs while striking out 6.

In game two, the Pioneers lost 4-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The Pioneers, down 4-0 started to rally in the bottom of the third inning. Kiefer led off the inning with a single and then proceeded to steal both second and third bases. She then scored on a fielder's choice put in to play by Fryer. Smith was able to collect six hits on the day but were unable to get any other runs across home plate.

Quinn took the loss in the circle, giving up 3 earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Hiltzik pitched 4.2 innings in relief giving up 1 unearned run while striking out 6.

The Pioneers return to action Thursday as they take on Endicott College at 9 am and then William Patterson University at 11 am.
