Smith Goes 1-1 on Day One of Rebel Games
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers opened their season today in Kissimmee, Florida as part of the Rebel Games. Smith won its opening match against Rutgers-Newark by a score of 3-1. Smith then dropped their second game to local rival Trinity College by a score of 12-3.
In their first game, Smith struck first in the top half of the fifth inning. While tied 0-0, junior Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) led off with a single to centerfield. She then advanced to second base on a passed ball before being sacrificed to third base by senior Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY). Kiefer then scored on an error by the Raiders' short stop, due to a ball put into play by first year Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, MA). With senior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) up to bat, an error by the Raiders' right fielder allowed Beaton to score and Quinn to advance to third base. Senior Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) then drove Quinn home on a single to left field.
In the circle, Quinn picked up the victory, going the distance while surrendering only four hits, striking out five and giving up one earned run.
In game two Smith fell to the Bantams of Trinity College 12-3. For the Pioneers, Paull and Kiefer each went 2 for 3 with one double and one run scored. Fryer also contributed going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. In the circle, senior Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) took the lost, giving up ten earned runs while striking out four.
The Pioneers return to action Monday as they face Nazareth in a doubleheader.
