Smith Splits Double-header with Nazareth

Northampton, MA: On day two of the Rebel Games, the Pioneers split a doubleheader with Nazareth College. With the split, Smith improves to 2-2 on the year while Nazareth now stands at 3-1.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Pioneers defeated the Golden Flyers of Nazareth 2-1. Down one run, Smith was able to get on the board in the fourth inning when senior Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) led off with a walk and was sacrificed over to second base by first year Kirstie Beaton (Osterville, MA). Sophomore Salome Stulberg (Brooklyn, NY), running for Paull, then scored on an error by Nazareth's first baseman on a ball hit by first year Jessica Daubner (Stoughton, WI). With the score tied in the fifth, first year Kathryn Durkin (Victor, NY) led off the inning with an infield single. Junior Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL), who was 2 for 3 on the day with two stolen bases, followed up with a single to left field. Senior Crystal Fryer (Louisville, KY) then added an infield single to load the bases for senior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL). Quinn drove Durkin home with an RBI single to put the Pioneers up 2-1.

Quinn recorded the win for Smith, improving to 2-0 after throwing 5.2 innings, giving up only five hits and one earned run while striking out two. Senior Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) picked up the save, throwing the final 1.1 innings without giving up a hit.

In game two of the doubleheader, Nazareth came out swinging. Scoring six runs on eleven hits and aided by four Smith errors, the Golden Flyers were able to defeat the Pioneers 6-0. For Smith, Quinn and Durkin were both 1 for 2 while junior Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) and Paull also added one hit each. In the circle, Hiltzik took the lost giving up six runs, four earned and striking out five.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they take on MCLA at 1 pm and University of Wisconsin-Stout at 3 pm.
