Wheaton Soccer Defeats Smith 4-1
Northampton, MA: Sophomore forward Emily Hough (Norwich, VT) tallied three goals this afternoon in Wheaton's 4-1 defeat of Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. With the victory, Wheaton improved to 14-4-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the conference while the Pioneers fell to 2-12-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the NEWMAC.
Wheaton put its first goal of the game on the board in the 21st minute of play when senior Jessica Bramucci (Ludlow, MA) dribbled the ball to the left corner end line and crossed it to Hough who placed it neatly in the left corner of the net. Less than three minutes later, the Pioneers tied the game on a corner by Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, VT) to senior Brittoni Famous (Chester Springs, PA) who headed the ball past keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI). On the opening play following the goal, the Lyons were awarded a free kick and capitalized as Lyndsey McManus (Marshfiled, MA) found Hough who headed the ball high into the net over the hands of Smith's Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) for what proved to be the game winner. First year Jessica Stuart (Weymouth, MA) registered the third goal of the half for the Lyons when she received a pass from Hough and found the left corner of the net.
The Lyons dominated play in the second half and Hough tallied her hat trick in the 53rd minute after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA). Bachtel made 10 saves in goal for Smith while Leddy made one stop for Wheaton.
The Pioneers travel to Springfield College while Wheaton visits Wellesley on Tuesday for their last regular season contests.
