Soccer Ties WPI 2-2
Northampton, MA: Sophomores Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, VT) and Ella Hartenian (Arlington, MA)each scored for Smith in the final 14 minutes of regulation to help Smith to a 2-2 overtime tie at WPI last night. With the tie, Smith is 2-11-2 on the season and 1-4-2 in the NEWMAC while WPI is 6-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the conference.
WPI dominated play in the first half outshooting Smith 11-1 but it wasn't until 1:09 before the half that Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) put WPI on the board. Garza took a pass from Kat Kulzer (Troy, NY) and shot it just past the dive of Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) to give WPI a 1-0 lead. The Engineers increased their lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute on a high shot by Kelsey Mawhiney (Johnston, RI) that sailed high into the top of the net.
The Pioneers closed to within one goal on a penalty kicky by Bludevich in the 77th minute. With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, junior Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT) took a corner kick and found Hartenian who tallied her first goal of the season and tied up the game.
The Engineers again dominated the overtime periods outshooting Smith 6-0, but Bachtel was outstanding in goal as she stopped all threats.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they host NEWMAC opponent Wheaton College at 1 p.m.
