Smith Soccer Defeats Mount Holyoke 2-1

Northampton, MA: Junior Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) scored both goals for Smith this afternoon en route to the Pioneers 2-1 defeat of valley and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke College. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play while the Lyons fell to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

Both teams were tentative in the opening minutes but at the 6:00 minute mark sophomore Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, VT) took a corner kick for Smith and found Grover-Silva who headed the ball high into the back right corner of the net for Smith's first goal. The Lyons had an opportunity to tie it a minute later when Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) was pulled off the line but a defensive save by first year Perri Hom (Westwood, NJ)  kept the Lyons scoreless.  Both teams had other scoring opportunies in the half.  Eleanor Theurer (Gainesville, FL) hit the crossbar for Smith and Mount Holyoke's Yuko Takahashi (Tochigi, Japan) almost tied the game but the ball hit the left post.

Grover-Silva tallied her second goal of the game in the 57th minute of action. She received the ball at the top of the eighteen, dribbled through three defenders and caught the keeper going right as she found the left corner of the net. Mount Holyoke increased its offensive pressure and just three minutes later, on a play that began off a free kick, Takahasi took a pass from Jesse Sugrue (Belchertown, MA) and scored for the Lyons. Although the teams exchanged shots in the remaining minutes, the game ended 2-1, Smith.

The Pioneers  travel to the U.S. Coast Guard for a 2 pm game on Saturday while the Lyons host WPI at 1 p.m.
