Smith Soccer Drops Close Match at Wellesley

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers opened their conference play against the Blue of Wellesley this afternoon with a 1-0 loss. With the defeat Smith fell to 1-7 (0-1) on the season while Wellesley improved to 3-1-2 (1-0).

Smith made a strong offensive push the final 10 minutes of play, where their best scoring opportunities occurred. With 5:45 left in the game Brittoni Famous (Chester Springs, PA) had a cross in the box headed away by the Wellesley defense securing the one goal lead. Katie Martore of Wellesley recorded 3 saves for the shutout victory.

Haley Geller of Wellesley scored the game winning goal 15:51 into the first half to provide the only goal of the day. Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) allowed only the one goal while collecting 5 saves.

Smith returns to action Wednesday October 1st at Westfield State for a 7 pm start.
