Smith Soccer Loses Heartbreaker to Skidmore

Northampton, MA: Smith soccer fell to Skidmore College this afternoon when Rachael Sushner '09 capitalized on a controversial penalty kick awarded to the Thoroughbreds in the 90th minute of play.

Although the Pioneers are certainly disappointed with today's result head coach, Stephanie Gabbert, was pleased with her team's effort this afternoon: "We put up a strong fight for ninety minutes against one of the top ranked teams in the nation. Our players worked together and did a fantastic job of executing our game plan. Unfortunately, the players' efforts were not rewarded with a win or a tie; however, our accomplishments as a team this afternoon put us in great position as we enter conference play next weekend."

Smith goalkeeper, Lauren Bachtel '09 (Dublin, OH) played an outstanding match with 11 saves on the day. Ellie Shorey of Skidmore stopped two shots.

The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday, September 24 as they host Brandeis University at 4:30 pm.
