Smith Soccer Defeats Elms 1-0
Northampton, MA: Junior Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) scored her first goal of the season today in what proved to be the game winner for the Pioneers. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 1-3 overall while Elms fell to 0-4 on the season.
In an evenly played contest, Grover-Silva scored the game winner 25 minutes into the first half when she found the lower left corner of the net from the top of the eighteen. The Pioneers had additional scoring opportunities in the second half. Junior Robin Chang (Palo Alto, CA) hit the crossbar at the 46 minute mark and Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, VT) took a free kick that hit the crossbar in the 87th minute.
Elms had numerous scoring opportunities but they were all stopped by Smith keeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) who registered the shutout, her first of the season. First year Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blazers and made seven saves.
The Pioneers are in action again on Wednesday, September 17 when they travel to Wesleyan University for a non-conference contest at 4:30 pm.
