Smith Falls to Springfield In NEWMAC Quarterfinals

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers ended their 2009 season with a 18-3 loss to Springfield College in a quarterfinal contest of the 2009 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship. With the loss, Smith fell to 4-12 overall while the Pride improved to 11-5.

The Pride's offense and defense dominated the first half as Springfield scored nine goals and held the Pioneers scoreless to take a 9-0 lead into the break.  The home team increased its lead to 10-0 before the Pioneers tallied three consecutive goals to close the gap to six. First year midfieler Mary Pasini (Columbus, OH) scored her tenth goal of the year for Smith at the 26:41 mark followed by Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ) at 20:10 and Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) with 18:32 remaining.  The Pride rattled off the next eight goals to take the 18-3 victory.   Goalkeeper Chelsea Henderson (White Plains, NY) took the loss for Smith as she allowed 13 goals and made 7 saves in the first 50:30 minutes of play.  Sophomore Elizabeth Niehoff (Bronxville, NY) completed the game in goal for the Pioneers and allowed five goals with 1 save.
