Lacrosse Takes Loss From Springfield

Northampton, MA: Junior Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ) scored three goals today for the Pioneers in Smith's loss to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Springfield College. With the victory, Springfield improved to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC while Smith fell to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Springfield struck first on a feed from Alexandra Bazzano to Megan O'Brien 34 seconds into the game. However, the Pioneers responded back quickly, nineteen seconds later, when junior Michelle Walsh (Northampton, MA) split two defenders on the crease for an unassisted strike to even the game at one. Springfield put three more in the net before Smith socred its final goal of the half as Whiting came from behind the cage and snuck a shot just inside the near post at the 22:59 mark. In the second half, Smith was only able to muster two additional goals, both scored by Whiting while Springfield added six more unanswered scores.

Jenn Zubkus and Nicole Soucie were the leading scorers for the Pride with 4 goals each while Bazzano added three. Lauren McAulay collected the win in goal for Springfield allowing only 4 goals and making 5 saves. Chelsea Henderson (White Plains, NY) took the loss in goal for Smith, allowing 21 goals with 2 saves.

The Pioneers will next play in the NEWMAC Championship First Round contest. The opponent, time and location of the game has yet to be decided.
