Lacrosse Falls at Wheaton, 21-8

Northampton, MA: Junior attack Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ) scored three goals today for the Pioneers in Smith's loss to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wheaton College. With the victory, the Lyons improved to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC while Smith fell to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

The Lyons opened the game with 5 goals before senior Blair Rapalyea (Prides Crossing, MA) put Smith on the board with 20:19 left in the first half. Wheaton put four more in the net before Whiting tallied the second goal for Smith with 10:58 left.  Rapalyea tallied her second goal of the game with 6:58 left but Wheaton took a 13-3 lead into the break.

Kaitlyn Murdough (Hinsdale, NH) scored for Smith at the 26:21 mark in the second half and Whiting again at 12:24 but the Lyons had built a 19-5 lead which was too much for Smith to overcome.  The Pioneers tallied the last three goals of the game - Whiting, Eve Whitehouse (North Reading, MA) and Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, CA).

Caitlin Grant was the leading scorer for the Lyons with 8 goals while Chrissy Norberg and Bridget Thornton each added three.   Marianna Marcellino collected the win in goal for Wheaton allowing 8 goals and making 8 saves.  Chelsea Henderson (White Plains, NY)and Elizabeth Niehoff (Bronxville, NY) split time in goal for Smith with Henderson taking the loss, allowing 13 goals with 3 saves.

The Pioneers will host NEWMAC and valley rival Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday, April 21 at 5 p.m.
