MIT Defeats Smith Lacrosse, 17-2

Northampton, MA: The Engineers of MIT scored 14 first half goals en route to their 17-2 defeat of Smith College this afternoon in Northampton. With the victory, MIT improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition while Smith dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The first half of play belonged to the Engineers as they shut out Smith 14-0. Senior Stephanie Brenman (Newton, MA) led MIT with a game high four goals while junior attack Casey Flynn (Silver Spring, MD) added three and senior midfielder Samantha O'Keefe (Carlisle, MA), Lynne Tye (Ithaca, NY), and Kelly Duncan (Rockville Centre, NY) each contributed to the offense with two goals. Although Smith got off seven shots in the half, MIT keeper Molly McCartin (Arlingto, VA) was outstanding in goal stopping each one.

The Pioneers avoided a shutout when junior attack Carolyn Whiting (South Orange, NJ) scored for Smith with 11:43 remaining in the second half. The Pioneers second goal was by senior co-captain Blair Rapalyea (Prides Crossing, MA) with 3:25 left. Smith keepers Chelsea Henderson (White Plains, NY) and Liz Niehoff (Bronxville, NY) split time in goal and combined for six saves.
