Lacrosse Defeats Elms College Handily

Northampton, MA: The Smith College lacrosse team traveled down to Chicopee, MA to take on the Blazers of Elms College in a non-conference contest yesterday afternoon. With three Pioneers finishing the match with hat tricks Smith earned the win 21-3 over Elms. The win moves Smith up to 1-2 on the season, while the Blazers drop to 0-4.

A total of  11 players scored for the Pioneers this afternoon including three goals apiece by Carolyn Whiting '10 (South Orange, NJ), Sarah Knowles '12 (North Kingston, RI), and Mary Pasini '12 (Columbus, OH) to help Smith to a 16-2 lead over Elms at the half. Blair Rapalyea '09 (Prides Crossing, MA), Michelle Walsh '10 (Northampton, MA), Phoebe Hopkins '12 (Philidelphia, PA), and Elizabeth Mauro '11 (Manalapan, NJ) each netted two goals for the Pioneers, while Eve Whitehouse '11 (North Reading, MA), Alyana Liptak '11 (Leads, MA), Sofia Nakhnikian-Weintraub '12 (Eugene, OR), and Megan Smith '12 (Bainbridge Island, WA) each tallied 1 goal for the Pioneers.

Eight of Smith's goals were assisted as great passes came from Rapalyea with 2, Whiting with 2, and Liptak, Nakhnikian-Weintraub, Alexandra Page '12 (Brookline, MA), and Whitehouse each adding 1 assist on the win.

Goaltending for Smith was split between Chelsea Henderson '10 (White Plains, NY) and Elizabeth Niehoff '11 (Bronxville, NY). Henderson faced three shots with 1 save and 2 goals against, while Niehoff stopped 1 shot while allowing 1 goal for the Blazers.

The Pioneers will travel to Babson on Saturday, March 28 for a conference match-up at 1 pm.
