Field Hockey Athletes Receive Post Season Honors
Northampton, MA: Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) and Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) were selected to the 2008 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All Conference team while Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA), Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) and Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) were all named to the 2008 NEWMAC Academic All Conference team.
Hopkins, a first year, was a NEWMAC First Team selection. She led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 goals and one assist and was second among NEWMAC leaders in goals (14) and goals per game (.78). She finished the season fifth in the NEWMAC standings in points (29) and points per game (1.61). Since her selection to the NEWMAC All Conference team, Hopkins was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) New England East Region Second Team. Junior midfielder Capute was selected to the NEWMAC All Conference Second Team for the second time in her collegiate career. She was second in points for Smith with five goals and five assists.
Long, Wickles and Winter were honored with having met the criteria for selection to the NEWMAC Academic All Conference Team. Each of them had a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher after the 2008 spring semester, had achieved second year academic status and been a member of the field hockey team for the entire season.
