Field Hockey Falls to Wheaton 2-1 (OT) in NEWMAC Quarterfinals
Norton, MA: The Smith Pionners fell to Wheaton 2-1 in overtime this afternoon in the NEWMAC Champtionship Quarterfinals. With the win, Wheaton improved its record to 12-6 overall while Smith finished the season 7-11.
Lindsey Nguyen (Brockton, MA) with an assist from Trina Campbell ( San Anselmo, CA) scored the first goal of the game and the only goal for Smith at the 12:18 mark. Nguyen tipped home Campbell's free hit from outside the circle after the ball almost entered the cage untouched. Emily Asack led Wheaton with two goals. Her first goal was tallied in the second half at 52:06 to tie the game and force overtime. In overtime, she scored the game winner at the 73:49 mark off of a penalty corner.
Smith Keeper Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA) held Wheaton scoreless in the first half by defending nine shots. She made seven saves in the loss for the Pioneers.
