Smith Field Hockey Wins Thriller in Double OT

Northampton, MA: Sarah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI) pushed a rebound past MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon to give the Pioneers the victory in double overtime over the Engineers in a NEWMAC contest this afternoon. With the win, the Pioneers improved to 6-7 (1-4) while the Engineers fell to 5-9 (0-6).

After a scoreless first half, Smith jumped on the board 11 minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal by Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) on a shot from the top of the circle. Less than ten minutes later, at the 55:56 mark, MIT tied the score with a goal by Anna Teruya assisted by Ekavali Mishra. Neither team was able to mount much offensive success through the remainder of the second half and the first overtime. The tie was broken as Knowles scored the game winner at the 88:02 mark, unassisted.

In goal, Courtney Murphy (Florence, MA) earned the win giving up one goal while making 5 saves. For MIT Dixon took the loss giving up 2 goals while making 4 saves.

The Pioneers return to action Tuesday October 21st as they host WPI in a NEWMAC game that begins at 6 pm.
