Field Hockey Falls 2-1 at Clark
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Confererence (NEWMAC) rival Clark University 2-1 last night in Worcester, Massachusetts. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC while Smith dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in conference competition.
Clark scored its first goal just five minutes into the game when Precious Ra'Akbar received a pass from Chelsea Proulx and fired into the far right corner of the cage. The Pioneers best opportunity to tie the game was in the fifteen minute mark as Trina Campbell (San Anselmo, CA) and Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA) each had shots but were stopped by Clark keeper Kathryn Dawsey. Just a few minutes later, Clark tallied its insurance goal on a shot by Kate Condon as Proulx tallied her second assist of the night.
In the second half, the Pioneers avoided the shutout when Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) hammered home a shot with an assist from Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT). Although the Pioneers outshot their host 22-9, they were unable to convert another goal. Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) allowed both goals and made 3 saves and teammate Courtney Murphy (Northampton, MA) made one save.
The Pioneers travel to non-conference opponent Western New England College on Thursday night at 7 pm.
