Westfield State Field Hockey Defeats Smith 4-3
Northampton, MA: Michelle Walsh (Northampton, MA) and Amanda Burns (Hillsdale, NY) each scored two goals for their respective teams in an action packed game tonight in Northampton with Westfield taking home the 4-3 victory. With the win, the Owls improved to 5-4 while the Pioneers fell to 4-6.
Westfield controlled the first half scoring three goals. Burns put the Owls on the board at 10:28 as she broke through the pack and went one-on-one with Smith keeper Maria McMahon (Old Tappan, NJ). She found the back of the goal again at 27:47 with an assist from Vicky Winson (Upton, MA). The Owls third goal was by Wison just two minutes later to give Westfield the 3-0 lead at the half.
The Pioneers fought back in the second half of play and scored at 42:15 when
Sarah Knowles (North
Kingstown, RI) pass found Lindsey Nguyen (Brockton, MA) who hammered a shot past Westfield keeper Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, MA). Action continued on both ends of the field with the defense taking control until the 63rd minute of play. Smith's Walsh scored from the top of the circle at 62:27 to bring the Pioneers within one but Westfield answered with a goal by Jessi Gould (Canton, MA) less than two minutes later. Walsh scored again at the 65:00 minute mark but the Owls held on to take the 4-3 victory.
Smith travels to Clark University on Tuesday, October 14 for a 7 pm contest.
