Field Hockey Falls at Mount Holyoke

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell to valley and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke College 5-1 last night in South Hadley. With the loss, the Pioneers dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference while the Lyons imporved to 6-3 and 2-1 in NEWMAC competition.

The Lyons scored early in the first half on a goal by Jess Fajardo with an assist by Katelyn Frick but Smith's defense stepped up and seven saves by Pioneer keeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) held the score to 1-0 at the half.

Frick scored quickly in the second half to give the Lyons a 2-0 lead but Smith took advantage of a penalty corner to close the gap to one in the 51st minute when first year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) ripped a shot past Lyon's keeper Allie Walsh. The Lyons responded with three unanswered tallies to take the 5-1 victory. Winter faced 21 shots and made 12 saves in the loss for Smith.

The Pioneers host non-conference opponent Westfield State on Thursday, October 9 at 6 pm.
