Smith Field Hockey Defeats Regis in OT
Northampton, MA: First year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) scored unassisted in the first overtime period to give the Pioneers a 2-1 victory over Regis College this evening in Northampton. With the win, Smith improved to 4-3 while the Pride fell to 0-11.
The Pioneers' offense dominated throughout the entire game but the Pride's defense frustrated Smith as many of its shots were blocked and rejected. Junior Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) gave the Pioneers an early lead as she scored 2:48 into the game with an assist from classmate Lindsey Nguyen (Brockton, MA). Smith continued to hammer the goal with shots but had a difficult time getting through the defense. Senior midfielder Alex Kluchnick (Intervale, NH) tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty stroke with no time remaining in the first half after Smith keeper Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) was called for smothering the ball. The second half was a repeat of the first with the Pioneers dominating play but unable to convert a goal. Smith outshot Regis 19-2 for the game and took 19 penalty corners to the Pride's two. Kristen Tavares (Acushnet, MA) made 7 saves in the loss for Regis.
The Pioneers will host NEWMAC rival Babson College on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
