Field Hockey Defeats Elms 3-1
Chicopee, MA: The Pioneers scored three first half goals last night against Elms College to defeat the Blazers 3-1 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. With the victory, Smith improved to 3-2 overall while Elms fell to 1-6.
First year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) scored her sixth goal of the year just 20 seconds into the game as she blasted a shot past Elms keeper Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA). Sophomore midfielder Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) scored what would be the game winner in the 23rd minute with an assist from Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA) while co-captain Trina Campbell (San Anselmo, CA) added an insurance goal in the 31st minute.
The Blazers scored their goal just 4:40 into the second half on a goal by Courtney Gilmore (Mansfield, MA) but the Pioneers defense held Elms scoreless the remainder of the contest. Smith outshot the home team 26-2 and had 13 penalty corners to Elms one.
Smith opens New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 27 when Wellesley College visits the Pioneers at 1 p.m.
