Field Hockey Falls 7-0 to Springfield

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers fell 7-0 to Springfield College today in the title game of the Springfield Invitational. With the loss, Smith fell to 1-1 overall while the Pride improved to 2-0.

The home team outshot Smith 22-2 in the first half and put five goals on the board to cruise to the 7-0 victory. Meagan Dobson tallied the first goal for Springfield at the 18:19 mark followed by Karah Heald at 16:43.  Jane Kelleher registered a hat trick stringing together the next three goals to give the Pride a 5-0 lead at the half.

Sophomore Courtney Murphy (Northampton, MA) took the loss in goal for the Pioneers as she gave up 5 goals and made 7 saves in 35 minutes of action.  First year Maria McMahon (Old Tappan, NJ) played the second 35 minutes for Smith and gave up 2 goals with 6 saves.

Alison McCarthy registered the win for Springfield with 5 saves and 0 goals allowed in 70 minutes.

Smith will travel to Nichols College on Tuesday, Sept. 9 for a 7 pm contest.
