Field Hockey Defeats WNEC 5-2
Springfield, MA: First year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) made her collegiate debut with a hat trick today in the season opener for the Pioneers as she led Smith to a 5-2 defeat of Western New England College at the Springfield Invitational.
Junior Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) put the first goal of the game on the board for Smith as she rebounded her own shot off the goalie and placed the ball in the top left corner. Hopkins followed with the next two goals, both hard shots from the top of the circle to give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage at the half.
Western New England opened the second half with a goal by Kaela Jalbert with an assist from Aimee O'Connell but less than one minute later, sophomore Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) gave Smith its fourth goal unassisted. O'Connell tallied WNEC's last goal at the eight minute mark and with just ten seconds left in the game, Hopkins registered her hat trick unassisted.
Junior Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) played all 70 minutes in goal for Smith and made 8 saves while Lindsey Orszulak made 21 for Western New England.
The Pioneers will face host Springfield tomorrow at 1 pm for the championship.
