Smith Crew Finishes 6th at NCAA Rowing Championship

Northampton, MA: The Smith I (6:47.12) finished in seventh place today out of sixteen eight's at the 2009 NCAA Rowing Championships held in Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. This appearance mark's Smith's fifth trip to the National Championship in the past eight years. Williams College defended its championship title and won the grand final in 6:28.04.

The Smith I finished second in its heat (7:22.20) yesterday and advanced to the grand qualifier where the team finished in fifth place (7:02.92) which sent them to today's petite final. The Pioneers' second boat finished fifth in its heat (7:40.10) and sixth in yesterday's petite qualifier (7:09.08) that sent them to the today's third final where it finished sixteenth in 7:14.55.

Williams I won today's grand final (6:28.04) followed by Bates I (6:30.77), Trinity (CT) I (6:36.03), Ithaca I (6:39.16), Williams II (6:42.00) and Puget Sound (6:47.47). Smith I finished seventh overall but won the Petite Final in 6:47.12 followed by St. Lawrence I (6:51.75), Bates II (6:53.73), Trinity II (6:57.17), Williamette (7:00.55) and Ithaca II (7:00.66).  Washington of Maryland won the third final in 6:59.52) followed by Puget Sound II (7:04.81), St. Lawrence II (7:12.50) and Smith II (7:14.55).

Williams won the DIII eights and placed a second boat fifth in the Grand Final to finish with 24 points. Bates finished with 19 points having earned six points for a third place finish in the Petite final and 13 points for a second place finish in the Grand Final. Trinity took third overall with 17 points. The Bantams placed fourth in the Petite Final and third in the Grand Final. Ithaca finished fourth overall with 15 points after taking sixth in the Petite Final and fourth in the Grand Final. Puget Sound was fifth overall with 12 team points (second place in the third level final and sixth in the Grand Final). Smith and St. Lawrence each had nine points to tie for sixth place. Smith was fourth in the third level and won the Petite Final by 4.63 seconds over St. Lawrence.
