Smith Crew Performs Well at New England Championship
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers had a good day at the New England Championships held today on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts with three boats contending in the grand finals and two boats in the petite finals. With 24 crews racing, Smith finished sixth with 57 points behind Williams (108), the College of Holy Cross (72), Bates (72), Trinity (59) and the University of Vermont (58) for the women's overall points trophy.
The varsity eight finished second in its heat behind Bates in 6:52.32 to put them in the grand final. The boat struggled in the grand final and placed sixth (7:22.26) behind Williams (6:55.88), Bates (6:58.08), Trinity (6:58.52), University of New Hampshire (7:07.23), and the College of Holy Cross (7:15.06). The second novice eight as well as the third varsity eight also competed in their respective grand finals. The second novice eight placed fourth (8:10.92) behind the University of Vermont (7:42.74), Wesleyan (8:00.47) and Simmons (8:02.82). The 3V8, that placed third in its heat in 7:35.12, finished sixth in the grand final behind Williams (7:04.57), Wellesley (7:30.61), the College of Holy Cross (7:30.68), Trinity (7:38.18), and Tufts (7:47.81).
The novice eight and the second varsity eight competed in the petite finals. The novice 8 crew finished third in its heat in 7:31.15 behind Bates and Coast Guard and then won the petite final in 7:34 for a seventh place overall finish. The 2V8 was fourth in its heat (7:11.47) and finished second (7:19.55) in the petite final behind UNH (7:17.47) for an overall eighth place finish.
The team will race again next weekend at the ECAC Regatta held in Camden, New Jersey.
