Smith Crew Recaptures NEWMAC Rowing Championship Title
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers recaptured the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rowing Championship this morning on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts winning the varsity eight race in 7:07.60. The team also brought home the Florence Jope Smith Cup, awarded to the team with the highest number of points in the overall competition.
In the six boat varsity race, Smith defeated Wellesley College (7:13.97) by just over six seconds. Mount Holyoke placed third (7:14.44), Coast Guard fourth (7:19.76), WPI fifth (7:24.82) and Clark finished six in 8:10.16.
Only eight points separated the top three finishers for the Florence Jope Smith Cup. The Pioneers last took both the NEWMAC title and Florence Jope Smith Cup in 2006 and won it today for the seventh time overall. Smith claimed the cup winning not only the varsity race but taking first in the novice eight (7:28.30) and the second varsity eight (7:22.58) and finished third in the third varsity eight (7:50.50) for a total of 30 points.
Named to the NEWMAC All Conference Women's rowing varsity team were Eliza van Lennep (Rindge, NH) and Katharine Von Herrmann (Piedmont, CA) while Robin Spencer (Strafford, VT) was named to the novice team.
