Crew Races Against Holy Cross, Trinity and Mount Holyoke
Northampton, MA: The Smith crew raced against the College of Holy Cross, Trinity and Mount Holyoke this morning on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The varsity eight got off to a rocky start in the first 500 but then began accelerating and passed Mount Holyoke and then Holy Cross just before the finish linebut couldn't quite catch Trinity. Trinity finished in 6:40, Smith 6:50, Holy Cross 6:51 and Mount Holyoke 7:00.
A tough tailwind made things difficult for the second varsity eight. The shell rowed hard but couldn't get into the rhythm they wanted and ended up fourth (7:13) behind Holy Cross (6:56), Trinity (6:59) and Mount Holyoke (7:09).
The third varsity eight finished third out of four and finished third just one second behind Mount Holyoke. Trinity won the race (7:06), Mount Holyoke (7:14), Smith (7:15) and Holy Cross 7:26.
The novice 8 blazed the first 1000, with rating of 36 strokes per minute, but couldn't sustain it. The Lyons of Mount Holyoke chipped away at Smith's lead and took the race in 7:14. The Pioneers finished in 7:23 and Holy Cross in 7:41.
Having only practiced in their lineup for part of a practice, the second novice eight raced hard and took second in 8:19.37 behind Simmons (7:59.6) and ahead of Mount Holyoke (8:21.9).
