Crew has Solid Races in Worcester
Northampton, MA: The Smith College crew team traveled to Worcester, MA to take on Wesleyan University, Colby College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and the College of the Holy Cross this afternoon.
The Smith varsity 8 finished second out of four boats. The Pioneers led at the 1000 meter mark, but a gust of wind bobbled things for Smith and Wesleyan took full advantage as they were able to maintain a 3/4 of a boat's length lead to the finish with a time of 7:15.8. Smith finished in second at 7:19.45 ahead of Colby (7:37.44) and WPI (7:42.67).
The second varsity 8 and the third varsity 8 finished first and third racing against Wesleyan and Colby. Smith second varsity dominated from the 200 meter mark finishing at 7:44.90 with the Smith third varsity racing to the line finishing at (8:01.44) beating Colby (8:01.86) and almost pulling out the victory over Wesleyan (7:58.83).
The first novice 8 boat finished second out of 4 teams--one length back from a strong WPI novice crew (7:58.64). Smith finished at 8:02.57, while Wesleyan took third at 8:06.72, and Colby finished last at 8:18.29. Conditions were tough with a strong crosswind, but the Pioneers are showing nice progress towards the end of the season.
Smith doubled racers in order to make up three novice boats and race all members of the Smith crew team. The second and third novice 8 boats took first and third place out of four teams with times of 8:34.60 and 8:41.90. Wesleyan finished second with a time of 8:38.20, while Holy Cross took fourth at 9:13.83.
