Smith Challenges Trinity, Come Short
Northampton, MA: Smith College Basketball was led offensively by Berit Schelde '10(Holstebro, Denmark)and Anna Veltri '11 (West Milford, CT) who combined for a total of 34 of the Pioneers' 61 points in the 61-74 loss to Trinity College, Hartford, CT. With the loss Smith falls to 5-4 while Trinity remains undefeated at 8-0.
Scoring for the Pioneers was shared between three players in double digits. Veltri and Schelde each scored 17 points while Schelde added 4 assists and 1 steal. Jessica Welk (Arlington,WA), Smith's leading scorer for the season put up 11 points and 4 rebounds. Seniors Courtney Parker (Ocean City, MD) and Meridith Murelli (Litchfield, CT) added 9 and 6 rebounds respectively.
Though Smith's relentless defense and hustle managed to force 13 turnovers, block 3 shots and 3 steals they still fell short of the upset. Trinity's leading scorer, Claire Arnstein put up 18 points along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. The Bantams made 50% of their three point shots and 43% of their field goals.
Smith basketball returns to action on Wednesday, January 7 and will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition when they host MIT at 7pm.
