Basketball Defeats Elms, 56-40

Northampton, MA: Junior guard Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) scored a team high 14 points last night at Elms to lead Smith to its 56-40 victory. In their best season start in seven years, the Pioneers improved to 4-1 overall while the Blazers fell to 0-5.

Elm's Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) gave the Blazers a 2-0 lead a minute and a half into the game but Smith built a 14-6 advantage over the next nine minutes. Elms closed within two (21-19)  but with 4:38 left in the half, the Pioneers answered with an 11-3 run to build a 32-22 lead at the break. Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ) tallied seven points with10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action for Smith.

The Pioneers maintained their lead in the second half and increased it to 43-29 with 11:16 remaining to seal the victory.  Vuono registered a double double for the game with 11 points and 17 rebounds while sophomore Anna Veltri (West Milford, CT) added 10 points for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers travel to Gordon College on Tuesday, December 2nd for a 7 pm contest before returning home on Thursday, December 4th to host Wheelock at 7 pm.
