Basketball Closes Out Season Play with 57-53 Win Over Wellesley

Northampton, MA: The Smith College basketball team finished out the season this afternoon with a win over Wellesley College, 57-54, in Wellesley, MA. With the win the Pioneers advanced their record to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Wellesley falls to 10-11 (4-9 NEWMAC).

The Pioneers were a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line including four from Anna Veltri '11 (West Milford, NJ) in the final 30 seconds of the game. Veltri had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists on the night.

Berit Schelde '10 (Holstebro, Denmark) led all scorers with 16 points to help the Pioneers take the four point win over Wellesley. Jessical Welk '11 (Arlington, WA) added 12 points for Smith. The three Pioneers seniors finished out their career at Smith with a combined 6 steals on the night: Meredith Murelli '09 (Litchfield, CT), Sarah Posnak '09 (Miami, FL), and Coutrney Parker '09 (Ocean City, MD) each contributed 2 of Smith's 11 steals. Parker added 5 rebounds, 4 points, and an impressive 3 blocks.
Lisa Marie Vuono '10 (Lyndhurst, NJ) led all players with 9 rebounds in addition to her 7 points.
