Smith Basketball Falls to Clark 76-64
Northampton, MA: Smith College Basketball lost 76-64 to NEWMAC rival Clark University this afternoon. With the loss, the Pioneers drop to 8-10 (2-6) on the season. The Cougars improve their record to 8-11 (4-3).
Though Smith started the game slow, they closed a twenty point first half deficit with the help of Jessica Welk (Arlington, WA), Meredith Murelli (Litchfield, CT) and Berit Schelde (Hostlebro, Denmark) who combined for 19 of the teams 30 first half points.
Schelde led Smith among scorers with 20 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists followed by Welk with 15 and Murelli with 12. Anna Veltri (West Milford, NJ) led Smith in rebounds with 6 on the day.
Though Smith buckled down on defense, holding Clark to 30 percent shooting in the second half compared to 50 in the first, they still allowed Clark's Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, ME) and Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, MA) to score 22 and 19 points respectively.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, Feb. 4th at 7:00PM as they travel to Coast Guard in a NEWMAC contest.
