Basketball Falls to Mount Holyoke in a NEWMAC Contest
Northampton, MA: Smith College basketball lost to local rival, Mount Holyoke, 53-45 this evening in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match-up. With the loss the Pioneers drop to 8-9(2-5) on the season. The Lyons improve their record to 6-12(3-3).
Smith started the night out strong with the help of Berit Schelde's '10 (Holstebro, Denmark) 12 first-half points shooting 7-14 from the floor leading the Pioneers to a 29-22 half-time edge.
The Lyons picked up their defense and protected the ball in the second-half forcing 13 Pioneer turnovers to Mount Holyoke's 6. Erin Cain '10 (Quincy, MA) led Mount Holyoke in scoring with 10 points shooting 4-8 from behind the arc.
Courtney Parker '09 (Ocean City, MD) led the Pioneers in rebounds with 9 on the game. Lisa Marie Vuono '10 (Lyndhurst, NJ) added 8 boards, while Meredith Murelli '09 (Litchfield, CT) finished the night with 7.
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, February 14 at 2 pm in Northampton.
The Pioneers will play next as they host Clark University on Saturday, January 31 at 2 pm in a NEWMAC match-up.
