Basketball Defeats Thomas College 63-51

Northampton, MA: Junior Berit Schelde (Holstebro, Denmark) tallied a game high 21 points this evening as the Pioneers defeated non-conference opponent Thomas College 63-51 in Waterville, Maine. With the victory, Smith improved to 7-5 while the Lady Terriers fell to 2-6.

Smith began the game on a 20-8 run over the first ten minutes with Schelde scoring eight of her 21 points while Jessica Welk (Arlington, WA), Lisa Marie Vuono (Lyndhurst, NJ) and Courtney Parker (Ocean City, MD) each added four.

Down 33-23 at the half, Thomas opened the second half with a hoop by Amy Miles (Waldo, ME) but Smith once again put together a run to built their lead by 15 (43-28) with fifteen minutes remaining.  The Pioneers maintained the lead to take the victory.

Welk ended the game with 14 points while Vuono tallied a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Parker added three blocks to bring her season total to 20. 

Miles led the Terriers with 18 points while Mallory Blakney (Fairfield, ME) chipped in with 14. 

Smith is in action again on Wednesday, January 14 when they resume NEWMAC action at Clark University at 7 p.m.
