Smith Volleyball Defeats Eastern Connecticut 3-1

Northampton, MA: Co-captain Catherine Shafer (Red Bluff, CA) had a team high 25 digs along with 14 kills and two service aces to lead the Pioneers past Eastern Connecticut College 3-1. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 10-9 while Eastern Connecticut fell to 6-19.

The Pioneers, who defeatd the Warriors 30-25, 30-21,28-30, 30-23, also received good performances from Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) who dished out 21 assists, served four aces and had 12 digs; Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN) added 9 kills, 20 assists and 2 service aces and Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH) tallied 11 kills, 2 solo blocks and 3 service aces.

Sandra Jaques (Milford, CT) led the Warriors with 13 kills and 21 digs while sisters Lauren and Lindsey Odell (Dover Plains, NY) combined for 35 digs. Setter Jen Braswell (Wilton, CT) had 24 assists in the loss. 

The Pioneers will host the eight-team Smith Invitational this weekend with games at 5 & 7 pm on Friday night and 9, 11, 1 & 3 on Saturday.
