Volleyball Drops NEWMAC Opener to MIT 3-0

Northampton, MA: The Smith Pioneers fell to MIT 30-22, 30-24 and 30-19 last night in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)opener for both teams. With the win, MIT improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in conference while Smith fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Sophomore Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN) led the Pioneers offense with nine kills and collected nine digs. First year Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) registered 16 assists and five digs while Brianne Connizzo (Demarest, NJ) notched a match-high 17 digs. Co-captain Katie Shafer (Red Bluff, CA) added 16 digs and five kills in the loss.

Smith will travel to NEWMAC foe Coast Guard on Saturday, September 15 for a 1 p.m. match.
