Track & Field Takes Fifth in NEWMAC Championship

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers finished in fifth place today with 52 points in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track & Field Championships held today at Smith. Wheaton College won the meet with 205 points followed by Springfield (203), MIT (178), Coast Guard (67), Smith (52), Mount Holyoke (28), WPI (25) and Babson (18).

First year Shakwana Etienne (West Orange, NJ) had three personal best performances today finishing fourth in the shot put (11.04m), 12th in discus (27.48m), and 18th in the hammer (21.44m). Junior Claire Edwards (Klamath Falls, OR) finished fifth in the 100m (13.39) and set a personal best time with her 7th place finish in a time of 27.30 and placed fifth in the long jump (5.02m).  She, along with Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA), Uzuri Sims (San Diego, CA) and Jasmine Liverpool (Brooklyn, NY) placed third in the 4x100m relay in their fastest time this year (51.20) while the 4x400m relay team comprised of Alina Ainyette (South Orange, NJ), Liverpool, Sims and Hailey Bird (Salt Lake City, UT) took fifth in their best time this season in 4:08.45. Ainyette also placed seventh for Smith in the 400m (1:02.15) while Liverpool took tenth (1:04.12). Junior Leonora Pepper (Arlington, MA) set a personal mark in the 1500m (5:30.96) while Liverpool followed suit in the long jump with her fourth place finish  (5.06m).  Sophomore Grover-Silva received All Conference Second Team honors with her second place finish in the pole vault (3.25M).  Senior Alison Cloutier (East Hampton, CT) finished 10th in the 5000m (20:37.60); Sims 6th in the 400m hurdles (1:10.04), Liverpool seventh in the triple jump (9.77m); Catherine McGuinness (Fairfax, VT) 6th in the shot (10.03m) and Elizabeth Isenstein (Deerfield, MA) 5th in the javelin (29.16m).
