Smith Tennis Upsets Wheaton 5-4
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers upset Wheaton College 5-4 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)tennis match this afternoon in Northampton. With the win, Smith improved to 3-3 overall and in NEWMAC competition while the Lyons fell to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Smith took an early 2-1 lead in the match after the number two doubles team of Catherine Hill-Lydecker (Conway, NH) and Alanna Dick (Winthrop, ME) won their match 8-4 and the third doubles team of Tina Jackson (Payson, AZ) and Nawal Mays (Niskayuna, NY) took their match 8-6.
The match was tied at 4-4 after Catherine Teague (Manchester, NH), Sarah Geocaris (Newport Beach, CA) and Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA) of Wheaton and Dick and Jackson of Smith won their singles matches. The Pioneers pulled out the victory at number three singles when HIll-Lydecker won her first game 6-2 and the second 7-6. With the tiebreaker at 3-3, she tallied the next four points to win it 7-3 and secure Smith's win.
Both teams will host NEWMAC opponents on Saturday, October 13 at 1 pm with Smith taking on Springfield and Wheaton facing Babson.
