Tennis Defeats Mount Holyoke 6-3
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers won their first match of the season yesterday in South Hadley as they defeated valley and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)rival Mount Holyoke 6-3. With the victory, Smith improved to 1-2 overall and in conference competition while the Lyons fell to 0-3 overall and in the NEWMAC.
Mount Holyoke took an early lead in the match winning two out of three doubles matches. Smith's Diana Fiumefreddo (Winchester, VA) and Catherine Lydecker (Conway, NH) teamed up at number one doubles while Nikki Anderson (Sherborn, MA) and Alanna Dick (Winthrop, ME) played number two. Both teams fell 5-8 to the Lyons. Seiko Fujii (Aichi, Japan) and Nawal Mays (Niskayuna, NY) teamed up at third doubles and defeated Eleni Scordilis and Elise Frankel 8-4.
The Pioneers secured their first victory of the season taking five of six singles matches. Fiumefreddo defeated Natalie Hsiang 6-3, 6-4 at number one; Fujii defeated Meaghan Sloane 6-3,6-0 at number two; Anderson won 6-1,6-3 at number three while Dick and Mindy Chu (Los Altos, CA) took the 5th and 6th matches by indentical 6-1,6-4 scores.
The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 29 when they travel to NEWMAC rival Wellesley College for a 1 p.m. match.
