Smith Swimming and Diving Has Strong Showing at Seven Sisters Championship
Northampton, MA: The Pioneers finished in third place in the 2008 Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championship this weekend. Smith finished with 717 points, behind both Vassar College (891.5) and meet champion Wellesley College (1126.5).
Smith received very strong individual performances throughout the weekend, finishing with seven event winners including three that set new meet records. Shanti Freitas (Evanston, IL) set new meet records in both the 1 and 3 meter dives. Her score for the 1 meter was 483.00, while she scored 511.45 in the 3 meter. Her three meter score blew away the previous meet record of 442.55 which had stood since 1996.
Marly Pineda (Bosque Farms, NM) also set a meet record with her time 18:12:32 in the grueling 1650 free event. This time broke her own previously held meet record. Pineda also had a first place finishes in the 400 IM with a time of 4:46:96, the 500 free with a time of 5:16:29, and the 200 fly with a time of 2:13:13.
The Pioneers final first place finish came in the 100 fly as Lily Seidman (Westfield, IN) won the event with a time of 1:02:05. Seidman also had a second place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20:00. Also in second place was Smith's 800 free relay team consisting of Seidman, Rachel Dorset (Stratford, CT), Reyna Levine (Kalamazoo, MI), and Pineda with a time of 8:37:82.
Francesca Kotey (Gainseville, FL) had a third place finish in the 50 free with a time of 26:15. Levine also took third place in the 200 breast with a time of 2:42:56. Additionally, the Pioneers had three relay teams with third place finishes. The 400 medley, consisting of Christine Dzialo (Belchertown, MA), Levine, Pineda, and Kotey had a time of 4:27:32. The 200 medley relay consisting of Lenora Walter (Santa Ynez, CA), Levine, Dorset, and Kotey had a time of 2:03:25. Lastly, the 400 free relay came in third with a time of 3:51:98. That relay team was comprised of Kotey, Dzialo, Pineda, and Seidman.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday, February 9th as they take on Mount Holyoke at home with a 1 pm start.
