Softball Drops Doubleheader

Northampton, MA: The Pioneers dropped a pair of games to out of conference opponent Brandeis by scores of 3-2 (8 innings) and 9-0 (5 innings). With the losses, Smith now stands at 13-21 on the season. The Judges of Brandeis raised their record to 26-7-1.

In the first game, the Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the 5th inning on a single down the left field line by Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) which plated Salma Mehter (Seattle, WA) and Megan Kierfer (Oak Park, IL). With the runs the Pioneers went up 2-1 but were unable to hold the lead. The Judges scored one run in the bottom of the 7th to tie up the game and won it in the 8th inning during the international tiebreaker.

Dee Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) started the game for the Pioneers, going 4 innings giving up one run on 3 hits while striking out three. Quinn then entered the circle for her first pitching innings of the season. Quinn threw 3 innings giving up one run while striking out 4. Emily Hiltizk (Westbury, NY) entered the circle in the bottom of the 8th and got the hard luck lose for the Pioneers giving up a lead-off hit which scored the runner that had begun on second base as part of the tie breaking procedure.

In the second game, the Pioneers fell behind early, giving up four and five runs in the second and third innings. Hiltzik took the lose giving up 4 runs, all unearned, in 2 innings of work.

Offensively, Cryal Fryer (Louisville, KY) led Smith going 2-3 with two doubles. Additionally, Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) and Laura Robitzek (Aubrun, ME) each collected one hit.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they face Springfield College at 2:30 pm at Wheaton College for the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Conference tournament.
