Smith Pitching Dominates Doubleheader

Northampton, MA: Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) threw 12 of Smith's 14 shutout innings as the Pioneers defeated NEWMAC opponent WPI with scores of 1-0 and 5-0 this afternoon. With the wins, Smith raised its overall record to 12-18 and its conference record to 5-9. Additionally, the Pioneers moved into a tie for the 6th and final Conference playoff spot with Coast Guard whom they host for a doubleheader on Saturday. WPI dropped to 14-18 on the year and 3-9 in the NEWMAC.

In game one, the Pioneers jumped on the board in the first inning with a lead-off homerun by Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL), her fifth homerun on the season. The Smith offense was then held in check for the final six frames by WPI pitcher Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA). In the circle for the Pioneers, Hiltzik pitched a complete game shutout scattering 5 hits while striking out 2.

The second game featured much of the same in the circle for the Pioneers. Dee Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) pitched the first two scoreless frames before Hiltzik came in to pitch the final 5 frames in relief. The two combined for a one hitter, with Hiltzik earning her second victory of the day.

Offensively, Kiefer went 2-3 with a run scored, Kate Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) went 1-4 with an RBI double and 2 runs scored, and Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) went 1-4 with two RBIs.

The Pioneers host Coast Guard Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
