Softball Drops Two to Wellesley

Northampton, MA: Smith softball took two losses, 1-8 and 0-8, from rival Wellesley College this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader. With the losses Smith falls to 8-16 on the season(2-8 in NEWMAC), while Wellesley improves to 19-5-1 (10-2 in NEWMAC).

Erin Quinn '09 (Northbrook, IL) put Smith on the board in game one with a homerun in the top of the fifth inning. Laura Robitzek '10 (Aubern, ME) led off the sixth inning with a double for Smith, but was stranded at second.

In game two, Wellesley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. However, the Pioneers got things going in the top of the second as Quinn was hit by a pitch and Jessie Paull '09 (Mercer Island, WA) advanced her to second off a single to center field. Emily Hiltzik '09 (Westbury, NY) managed to load the bases off a Wellesley error with only one out. However, Quinn was caught stealing at home plate for out number two followed by Robitzek striking out to end the inning. Wellesley was able to control the remainder of the game and take the 0-8 win in six innings.

Smith softball will be back in action Monday, April 14 as they host Clark at 3:30 pm in NEWMAC play.
