Smith Softball Sweeps Williams in Doubleheader
Northampton, MA: In a non-conference doubleheader, the Pioneers defeated the Ephs of Williams College by scores of 6-5 and 3-2 (5 innings). With the wins, the Pioneers raised their overall record to 8-14 while the Ephs fell to 10-13 on the year.
In the first game, the Pioneers fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning. They battled back scoring runs in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2. The Ephs then put up another run on the board in the third to again take the lead. Smith responded with two runs in the bottom of the 5th and 6th to take back the lead, which they would not relinquish.
Offensively, Megan Kiefer (Oak Park, IL) led the Pioneers going 4-4 with 3 doubles, 2 runs, and 2 RBIs. Additionally, Kate Schoenen (Ellicott City, MD) went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Erin Quinn (Northbrook, IL) also drove in two runs while going 1-3 on the day.
In the circle, Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) and Emily Hiltzik (Westbury, NY) combined to give up only 3 earned runs over the 7 innings. While Hiltizk started the game, throwing 3 strong innings, Fisher entered in the 4th inning to hold the Ephs and take the win.
In the second game, the Pioneers jumped on the board early, scoring single runs in both the bottom of the second and third innings. Williams answered with a run in both the top of the 4th and 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, Taryn Pestalozzi (Troutdale, OR) drove in Schoenen from first on a double which ended up being the game winning hit. The game was called after the bottom of the 5th due to darkness.
Hiltzik and Fisher again split time in the circle, with Fisher earning the win, giving up 2 earned over 3.1 innings.
Offensively, Pestalozzi led the way for the Pioneers going 3-3 with 3 doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Additionally, Schoenen went 2-3 with a run scored, and Laura Robitzek (Auburn, ME) went 2-2 with a double and an RBI.
The Pioneers return to action Friday as they host Clark in a NEWMAC doubleheader begining at 3:30 pm.
